Sophie Scholl: Iconic Symbol of Civil Courage
Sophie Scholl
A German student and anti-Nazi resistance activist. Along with her older brother Hans Scholl, she is known as a key member of the "White Rose," a student resistance organization active mainly in Munich. Influenced by Christian, philosophical, and literary thought, her criticism of the Nazi dictatorship deepened, leading her to participate in the production, copying, and distribution of anti-Nazi leaflets starting in 1942. On February 18, 1943, she was arrested while distributing the final batch of leaflets with her brother Hans at the University of Munich, sentenced to death by the People's Court, and executed by guillotine on the same day at Stadelheim Prison. After the war, she became a symbol of the anti-Nazi resistance movement and civic courage in Germany.
