Joseph Goebbels
Joseph Goebbels
A German politician, senior Nazi Party official, propagandist, and philologist. As one of Adolf Hitler's most loyal close associates, he served as Gauleiter of Berlin from 1926 to 1945 and became the Reich Propaganda Leader of the Nazi Party in 1930. In March 1933, he was appointed Reich Minister of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, extensively controlling information and cultural fields in Germany, including newspapers, radio, film, publishing, theater, and music. He aggressively promoted antisemitic propaganda, driving campaigns to gain public acceptance for the Nazi regime's persecution of Jews and its wartime policies. As the war effort deteriorated during World War II, he advocated total war, urging the continuation of the war effort through speeches such as the Sportpalast speech in 1943. In 1944, he was appointed Reich Plenipotentiary for Total War. Following Hitler's suicide on April 30, 1945, Goebbels served as Chancellor of Germany for just one day in accordance with Hitler's last will, before committing suicide with his wife Magda the following day.
