Friedrich Naumann and Liberal Reform
Friedrich Naumann
A German Protestant theologian, pastor, liberal politician, and social reformer. In 1896, he founded the National-Social Association (Nationalsozialer Verein), attempting to combine liberalism, German nationalism, non-Marxist socialism, and Christian social reform. In 1907, he became a co-founder of the Deutscher Werkbund and was also active as a Member of the Reichstag. During World War I, he developed the "Mitteleuropa (Central Europe)" theory, which envisioned German dominance over Central Europe, supporting war aims and imperialist foreign policy. On the other hand, he was involved in moves toward ending the war, such as supporting the Peace Resolution of 1917. After World War I, he participated in founding the German Democratic Party (DDP) and became a member of the National Assembly and party chairman in 1919. Having been involved in the enactment of the Weimar Constitution, he is considered one of the politicians representing the liberal and democratic forces of the early Weimar Republic.
