Arnold Schoenberg in WWII

Arnold Schoenberg

An Austrian-born composer, music theorist, and educator. One of the figures who fundamentally revolutionized 20th-century music, he expanded the framework of tonal music and, passing through atonality, systematized the twelve-tone technique. He mentored Alban Berg and Anton Webern, becoming the central figure of the so-called "Second Viennese School". Of Jewish heritage, he formally returned to Judaism in 1933 after fleeing the Nazi regime, traveling through France to settle in the United States, where he spent the latter half of his life composing and teaching.
