Ludwig Beck: Moral Military General

Ludwig Beck: Moral Military General

Ludwig Beck

A senior officer and staff officer in the German Army who served as Chief of the General Staff of the Army from 1935 to 1938. In the early 1930s, he supported German rearmament and initially viewed the establishment of the Nazi regime positively; however, he gradually came to oppose Hitler's rapid foreign expansionist policies and plans for an early war. In 1938, arguing that a war with Czechoslovakia was premature for Germany, he resisted the military leadership and resigned as Chief of Staff. Subsequently, he formed an anti-Nazi resistance movement with Carl Goerdeler, Hans Oster, and others. In the July 20, 1944 plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow the regime, he was designated to become the head of state of a provisional government after Hitler's removal. Following the failure of the plan, he was arrested and attempted suicide, but only wounded himself, and was executed by gunshot on the night of July 20, 1944.
