Heinrich Himmler
Heinrich Himmler
A German Nazi Party politician, police administrator, and military leader. From 1929 to 1945, he served as Reichsführer-SS, the supreme commander of the Schutzstaffel (SS), overseeing Nazi Germany's security and police apparatus, the concentration camp system, and the Waffen-SS. Controlling a vast security and repressive apparatus that included the Gestapo, SS intelligence, and the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA), he became one of the primary architects and perpetrators responsible for the planning and execution of the Holocaust—the mass murder of European Jews. Toward the end of World War II, he also commanded certain German military units, but after attempting to negotiate a separate peace with the Western Allies as the war situation deteriorated, he was stripped of all offices by Hitler. He was captured by British forces in May 1945 and committed suicide on the 23rd of that month.
