Hermann Göring

Hermann Göring

Hermann Göring

A German military officer, politician, and aviator who belonged to the highest echelons of the Nazi Party regime led by Adolf Hitler. During World War I, he served as a fighter pilot in the German military, achieving multiple aerial victories. He joined the Nazi Party in 1922 and led the Sturmabteilung (SA) during the Beer Hall Putsch in 1923. When Hitler became Chancellor in 1933, Göring rapidly expanded his authority, securing control over the Prussian state government, police, aviation administration, and economic policy. He was involved in founding the Gestapo and became Commander-in-Chief of the re-established German Air Force (Luftwaffe) in 1935. In 1936, he was placed in charge of the Four Year Plan, directing the militarization of the German economy. During World War II, he was deeply involved in the war effort as the top leader of the Luftwaffe and was appointed Reichsmarschall in 1940. Later in the war, he lost influence due to Luftwaffe defeats and Allied bombing of the German homeland, leading to a definitive rupture in his relationship with Hitler in 1945. After the war, he was tried as a primary defendant at the Nuremberg Trials, found guilty on all major counts, and sentenced to death, but he committed suicide shortly before his execution.
