Wade Hampton III: South Carolina General and Governor

Wade Hampton III

Wade Hampton III was one of the South's largest plantation owners and a Confederate cavalry general who organized the "Hampton Legion" at his own expense during the Civil War. After the death of J.E.B. Stuart, he commanded the cavalry corps and achieved distinction in battle. After the war, he served as Governor of South Carolina and a U.S. Senator. As a prominent leader of the "Redeemers," he overthrew the Republican Reconstruction government and reclaimed power for the Democratic Party. Alongside the resurgence of the old ruling class, he promoted railway development and industrial projects to drive the state's economic recovery.
