Joseph Egleston Johnston
Joseph Egleston Johnston
Joseph Egleston Johnston was one of the highest-ranking general officers who served at the highest level as a full general for the Confederacy during the American Civil War. He contributed to the victory at the First Battle of Bull Run and later commanded armies such as the Army of Tennessee. Although prone to friction with President Jefferson Davis, he excelled in skillful defensive and tactical retreat strategies to conserve forces, stubbornly resisting the invasion of Union forces led by General Sherman. After the war, he served as a US Representative and became a symbol of North-South reconciliation, even attending the funeral of his former arch-nemesis, Sherman.
