John Cabell Breckinridge: US Vice President and General
John Cabell Breckinridge
John Cabell Breckinridge was a Kentucky-born politician and general who served as the youngest U.S. Vice President in history at the age of 36. After running in the 1860 presidential election as a Southern Democrat, he commanded Confederate troops as a major general in the Civil War, leading forces at the battles of Shiloh and New Market. In his later years, he directed the winding down of the war as the final Confederate Secretary of War. After fleeing abroad following the defeat, he retired from public life and worked as a lawyer and railroad executive, dedicating himself to the construction of Kentucky's rail network and industrial revival.
