John Brown Gordon

John Brown Gordon was one of the Confederacy's preeminent brave commanders who enlisted as a captain without prior military education and rose to the rank of lieutenant general. He survived sustaining five severe wounds at the Battle of Antietam, earned General Lee's trust, and attended the surrender ceremony at Appomattox representing the army. After the war, he served successively as Governor of Georgia and as a US Senator.
