Alfred Holt Colquitt: Georgia Military Officer and Politician
Alfred Holt Colquitt
Alfred Holt Colquitt was a military commander and politician of the Civil War. He commanded Confederate forces at the Battle of Olustee in 1864, winning a major victory that blocked the Union invasion of Florida. After the war, he served as Governor of Georgia and a U.S. Senator. As part of a political alliance known as the "Bourbon Triumvirate" that seized power in the state, he preserved the traditional authority of the old South while powerfully promoting the attraction of Northern capital, railway construction, and industrialization, thus leading the economic development of the "New South."
