John Henninger Reagan: Confederate Postmaster General
John Henninger Reagan
John Henninger Reagan was a politician from Texas who served as the Postmaster General and Secretary of the Treasury of the Confederate States during the Civil War. Demonstrating great skill in making the postal service independent and efficient, he returned to politics after a period of postwar detention as a U.S. Representative and Senator. In addition to contributing to the enactment of the Interstate Commerce Act, he became the inaugural chairman of the Texas Railroad Commission. He led strict regulations against monopolistic railway operators, laying the foundation for the protection of farmers and small businesses and the regulation of modern industries in the South.
