James Longstreet
James Longstreet
James Longstreet was a fierce commander who served as a Confederate lieutenant general and was relied upon by General Robert E. Lee as "my old war horse." He deployed skillful defensive and counteroffensive tactics at the Second Battle of Bull Run and the Battle of Fredericksburg. After the war, he supported his friend President Grant to join the Republican Party and held public offices such as US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire. Although criticized by the white populace of the Old South, he dedicated himself to North-South reconciliation, the guarantee of civil rights, and regional reconstruction.
