Jubal Anderson Early
Jubal Anderson Early
Jubal Anderson Early was a soldier and jurist who wreaked havoc as a Confederate lieutenant general during the American Civil War. He spearheaded the Shenandoah Valley Campaign and marched to the doorstep of Washington, D.C. in 1864, causing panic among Union forces. Following the war, he threw himself into the mythologization and historical reinterpretation of the Confederacy as a radical unreconstructed partisan (leader of the "Lost Cause" movement). He was a central figure who established the historical view that praised Robert E. Lee's achievements while attributing defeat to the overwhelming material superiority of the Union.
