Alexander Hamilton Stephens: Confederate States Vice President
Alexander Hamilton Stephens
Alexander Hamilton Stephens was a politician who served as the vice president of the Confederate States during the American Civil War. Although initially cautious about secession, he was elected vice president upon Georgia's withdrawal and delivered the Cornerstone Speech. After the inauguration, he clashed with President Davis over centralization. Following postwar detention, he returned to politics, serving as a U.S. Representative and Governor of Georgia, playing a major role in Reconstruction-era Southern politics and federal reunification.
