Isaac Rosenberg's Trench Realism
Isaac Rosenberg
A British poet and painter. One of the representative war poets of the First World War, he depicted the daily lives, deaths, and physical suffering of soldiers in the trenches with a direct and unique sensibility. His famous works include "Break of Day in the Trenches," "Dead Man's Dump," and "Returning, We Hear the Larks." Raised in a poor Jewish immigrant family in London, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art aiming to become a painter, but enlisted in the British Army during the First World War to earn a living. He served on the Western Front from 1916 and was killed in action during the German Spring Offensive in 1918. Passing away before turning 28, his total output is limited, but he is highly regarded as a poet who portrayed the reality of war without idealization.
