Kitchener's Mobilization and War Strategy
Horatio Herbert Kitchener
British Army officer and colonial administrator. Eventually promoted to Field Marshal, he played key roles in the reconquest of Sudan, the Second Boer War, and the reform of the Indian Army. He achieved fame after defeating the Mahdist army at the Battle of Omdurman in 1898, establishing Anglo-Egyptian rule in Sudan. During World War I, as Secretary of State for War, he foresaw a long war and promoted the creation of a massive volunteer army as well as the expansion of munitions production. He is also the iconic figure on the famous recruitment poster "Kitchener Wants You". In 1916, en route to discussions with Russia, he died when his ship, HMS Hampshire, struck a German naval mine off the Orkney Islands and sank.
