Pre-WWI Medical Legacy of Plague Doctor Charles de Lorme
Charles de Lorme
A 17th-century French physician. Known for serving as the court physician to French Kings Henry IV, Louis XIII, and Louis XIV, he earned high renown in the French royal court and aristocratic society of the time. He is widely recognized for designing protective clothing for doctors attending patients during the 1619 plague epidemic in Paris. He also emphasized balneotherapy, bathing, and rest, helping to develop the thermal baths of Bourbon-l'Archambault into a resort for the upper classes. Although he also administered treatments using antimony, his medical theories and claims faced criticism even during his era.
