Henri Barbusse and Realist War Prose
Henri Barbusse
A French novelist, poet, journalist, and political activist. World-renowned for his First World War novel "Le Feu" (English title: "Under Fire"). Although a pacifist before the war, he volunteered for the French Army in 1914 and served on the Western Front for about 17 months. Based on his battlefield experiences, he deepened his critique of militarism, and after the war evolved his political stance toward pacifism, anti-war movements, socialism, and communism. He joined the French Communist Party in 1923 and also participated in anti-fascist movements. "Le Feu" won the Prix Goncourt in 1916 and became a masterpiece of First World War literature.
