Alexandre Millerand: Organizing French War Production
Alexandre Millerand
Politician, lawyer, and journalist of the French Third Republic. In his youth, he was active as a Radical Socialist and supported labor movements and social legislation. In the 1890s, he became a leading figure among Independent Socialists. In 1899, he became the first socialist to enter a cabinet by joining the Radical and Republican Waldeck-Rousseau ministry, sparking the "Millerand Affair" and causing intense debate within the international socialist movement. He later transitioned gradually from socialism to conservative republicanism, served as Minister of War during World War I, governed Alsace-Lorraine after the war, served as Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, and was President of France from 1920 to 1924.
