Asquith's Wartime Liberal Leadership
Herbert Henry Asquith
British politician and lawyer. Serving as a prominent Liberal Party politician, he held office as Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1908 to 1916. He promoted social reforms under the Liberal government, such as old-age pensions and national insurance, and significantly restricted the House of Lords' power to block legislation through the Parliament Act 1911. He also addressed Irish Home Rule and women's suffrage, and led Britain's war effort during World War I. In 1915, he formed a national coalition government, but growing criticism over munitions shortages and his military leadership led him to yield the premiership to David Lloyd George in December 1916. In 1925, he was created Earl of Oxford and Asquith.
