Varian Fry
Varian Fry
An American journalist, editor, and teacher. During World War II, based in Marseille, France, he led the operations of the Emergency Rescue Committee, helping Jews, anti-Nazi political exiles, artists, writers, and intellectuals facing persecution by Nazi Germany flee the country. Over approximately 13 months from August 1940 to September 1941, he used a combination of legal and illegal methods—such as obtaining visas, creating forged documents, and securing escape routes over the Pyrenees—and is believed to have been involved in the escape of roughly 2,000 to 4,000 people. His achievements were recognized after the war, and in 1994, he became the first American to be named "Righteous Among the Nations" by Yad Vashem.
