Nicholas Winton
Nicholas Winton
A British stockbroker, banker, and humanitarian. Between late 1938 and 1939, prior to World War II, he organized a rescue operation to evacuate refugee children from Czechoslovakia—particularly Jewish children—who were fleeing Nazi German control and persecution to Britain. He compiled a list of at-risk children in Prague, located host families in Britain, arranged funding and entry permits, and organized transportation via eight trains in 1939. Through this, 669 children were successfully rescued to Britain. His work went largely unknown for decades until 1988, when his wife Grete discovered his kept records, bringing his story to light and earning him the title "British Schindler."
