Raoul Wallenberg
Raoul Wallenberg
A Swedish architect, businessman, diplomat, and humanitarian. Towards the end of World War II, working as a diplomat at the Swedish legation in Budapest, Hungary, he is credited with saving tens of thousands of Jews from persecution by Nazi Germany and the Hungarian Arrow Cross Party. He conducted rescue operations by boldly leveraging his diplomatic status—issuing protective Swedish passports in large quantities and establishing buildings flying the Swedish flag as protected shelters. On January 17, 1945, during the occupation of Budapest by Soviet forces, he was detained by the Soviet counter-intelligence agency SMERSH and subsequently disappeared. Soviet authorities later claimed he died in prison in 1947, but many aspects surrounding his death remain unknown to this day.
