Patrick Blackett: Operational Research
Patrick Blackett
British experimental physicist. Known for his research in nuclear physics and cosmic rays using cloud chambers, he first demonstrated artificial nuclear transformation from a radioactive substance into another element using a cloud chamber in 1925. He achieved important results in research on the positron (an antiparticle) and cosmic rays, winning the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1948. During World War II, he developed operational research to scientifically analyze air defense and anti-submarine warfare, making great contributions to the Allied war effort. After the war, he criticized the military use of nuclear weapons and was involved in promoting science and technology in India, the development of developing nations, and the Labour Party's science and technology policy.
