Margaret Thatcher
Margaret Thatcher
British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister from 1979 to 1990. She was the country's first female Prime Minister and is known as the longest-serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century. Earning the moniker the "Iron Lady," she promoted market-oriented economic reforms such as the privatization of state-owned enterprises, deregulation, and curbing the influence of trade unions. In foreign policy, she decided on military action against Argentina in the Falklands War and advanced close cooperation with the United States. Conversely, she sparked intense controversy domestically over issues such as the miners' strike and the community charge (poll tax). She resigned as Prime Minister in 1990 and passed away from a stroke in 2013.
