Heath and European Integration

Edward Heath

A British Conservative politician and military officer who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1970 to 1974 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1965 to 1975. During World War II, he served as an officer in the Royal Artillery, participating in the Normandy landings and Allied combat in France and Germany. In the post-war era, he strongly supported European integration and, as Prime Minister, achieved Britain's accession to the European Economic Community (EEC). However, his premiership was marked by major challenges including the Troubles in Northern Ireland, miners' strikes, high inflation, and the energy crisis. After resigning as Prime Minister in 1974, he continued to serve as a Member of Parliament, becoming the "Father of the House" in 1992 and serving until 2001.
