Douglas-Home and Pragmatic Diplomacy

Douglas-Home and Pragmatic Diplomacy

Alec Douglas-Home

A British Conservative politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1963 to 1964. After succeeding as the 14th Earl of Home and entering the House of Lords in 1951, he disclaimed his peerage in 1963 to enter the House of Commons and assume the premiership. Although his tenure as Prime Minister was brief, he served twice as Foreign Secretary and played a vital role in Cold War diplomacy, Anglo-American relations, relations with the Soviet Union, and nuclear weapons issues. Prior to World War II, he served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain and accompanied him to the Munich Conference.
