James Woodrow Intellectual
James Woodrow
James Woodrow was a Presbyterian minister, scientist, and the uncle of President Woodrow Wilson. After earning a doctorate in natural sciences from the University of Heidelberg in Germany, he served as a professor at Columbia Theological Seminary. By advocating for the harmonization of Christian theology and evolutionary theory, he faced fierce backlash from conservatives, sparking an ideological conflict known as the "Woodrow Controversy." He later assumed the presidency of the University of South Carolina, dedicating himself to the promotion of higher education and intellectual curiosity in the American South.
