Claude Swanson Navy Leadership

Claude Augustus Swanson

Claude Augustus Swanson was a politician who served as Governor of Virginia, U.S. Senator, and Secretary of the Navy under the F. Roosevelt administration. Drawing on his extensive experience as Chairman of the Senate Naval Affairs Committee, this 1862-born veteran powerfully pushed forward a policy of military expansion. Utilizing New Deal budgets during the Great Depression, he spearheaded a massive naval ship-building program (the Vinson-Trammell Act), laying the foundation for the overwhelming maritime power of the U.S. Navy in World War II.
