Edith Bolling Galt Wilson
Edith Bolling Galt Wilson
Edith Bolling Galt Wilson was the second wife of President Woodrow Wilson and a First Lady from a prominent Virginia family. She accompanied her husband during World War I and the Paris Peace Conference, providing political counsel. After the President suffered a stroke in 1919, she exercised "stewardship" under the guise of ensuring his rest, leading the restriction of cabinet meetings and the screening of important documents. Acting as a de facto proxy, she managed parts of the administration and was sometimes referred to as a secret female president.
